The many direct drives produced in the hayday of turntables took advantage of such technology. We are also looking at a stock TD-125. As good as the TD-125 is, and when I got my TD-150 back in '74 it was a consultation to myself because I couldn't afford the 125, which I lusted for, its performance was surpassed by later technology. Golden Age Of Audio Thorens TD125 Long Base, SME M212R 12 Tonearm, and Custom Morado Plinth

The Thorens TD 125 is the high-end model from the early 1970s. It is a top quality instrument which, with reasonable care, will deliver optimum reproduction quality and protect your records for years to come. The player's plinth is made from Beech wood. The tree is gently processed, toned and painted with 4 layers of matte varnish.

Continued from Part 1…. Thorens TD 126 Turntable. The TD126 that followed offered even more electronic sophistication, including (again with original Thorens arm) semi-automated arm and start-stop functions. Ultimately, in the Mark III iteration, even the venerable synchronous motor made way for a DC unit, with even more electronic complexity.

Thorens TD-125LB. Classic belt-drive turntable and successor of the famed TD-124, a very different successor and not nearly as sought after. The TD-125 was originally offered with the TP-14 tonearm and TP-50 headshell, changed to TP-25 with the TD-125II (still with the TP-50) and sans tonearm for the large and very elegant TD-125LB version.

With the TD-125 MKII, Thorens introduced a clutch into the pulley which takes up slack in the belt at startup so that a steady speed is achieved more quickly. The 125 has a one piece pulley. In my experience, with a fresh belt on each turntable, it takes approximately 3 to 4 more seconds for the 125 to achieve a steady speed on the strobe..

The Thorens TD125 is a vintage classic still in demand among vinyl record enthusiasts today. This is the story of one restoration of a 40+ year old turntable, with an SME 3009 II tonearm. Thorens was a well-established Swiss brand of quality turntables long before. Linn and its peers appeared in the 1970s. The idler wheel drive TD124 remains.

While the TD 124 and the TD 150 were mainly dominated by mechanical assemblies and parts, the electronics of the TD 125 drive were used to a greater extent for the first time. While Thorens previously used the 50 Hertz power frequency for motor control, the 16-pole 220V AC synchronous motor is now driven by a 2-phase generator with a so-called Vienna bridge.

Thorens TD - 166 MKII, AR-XA, Mitsubishi DP-EC7, Aureus Helius arm, AudioCraft 3000MKII arm. Recently picked up a nonfunctional TD 125 MK II, without tonearm, for US$50. Spent another $120 fixing the electronics and mounting a Grace 707 MK II arm with Ortofon OM-30 MM cartridge which I had lying around.

Motor rotor speed on the TD-125 has been reduced to an incomparable 250rpm at 33 1/3rpm turntable speed. By combining this factor with solid-state circuitry and the Wein Bridge oscillator, Thorens has reduced rumble to an infinitesimal and inaudible -48db (-68db weighted); less rumble than any other turntable on the market!

The TD-125 replaced the 124 in 1968, crisply-bedecked in Scandinavian-style cabinetry. Its first iteration was made through 1971 (as seen here on the Thorens site, auf Deutsch) and the TD-125 mkII continued in production from 1972-1975. At least by Teutonic standards, both tables are pretty simple devices, belt-driven tables with suspended sub.

Thorens TD 125 Turntable. Beautifully styled flagships from the 1970s, both the 125, and the 126 stand as Germany's finest domestic turntables from the Golden Age. The TD designation, incidentally, comes from the French 'Tourne Disque', literally record spinner, or turntable. Having got that factoid out of the way, the history of these.

Thorens TD 125 Turntable. For some of us, it's the Rodney Dangerfield of the Thorens family of turntables. The barely-remembered TD 125 Mk II, though cherished when it was current, rarely figures in audiophile reminiscences, heated bar debates or lists of all-time greats. I used one for many years with an SME 3009 arm, and wish I still had it.
